What Happens During a Home Energy Audit?
A professional energy audit can take between 30 minutes and three hours to complete, depending on the size of your home. We use specialized tools to detect problem areas at your home.
Here is the process of a home energy audit:
Examination of Exterior of Home
We will examine your home from the outside. This includes inspecting the windows, walls, eaves, and roof to determine if any leaks are occurring.

Attic Inspection
We will inspect your attic to measure the level of insulation, analyze your air duct system, and search for leakage. A lack of insulation in the attic can lead to massive air leakage in the home. Old, dirty, or improperly installed insulation can signal that outside air is penetrating the home.
Our professionals will visually inspect all ductwork they have access to in the attic. We will observe each section of duct for gaps, disconnections, and tears. Our experts will inspect previously patched areas for integrity. We will mark any leaks found for later duct sealing work.
Examination of Air Conditioning
If your home is not getting adequate cooling in the summer months, there could be several reasons why. We will perform a thorough inspection of your air conditioning unit and the cooling in your home.
We will inspect your HVAC unit for a low level of refrigerant or leaks. Our experts will inspect your HVAC filters and coils to see if they are clogged or dirty.
We will also check your thermostat to see if it is maintaining the proper temperature. Sometimes a faulty sensor or thermostat mechanism can lead to problems. We typically recommend that you upgrade to a smart thermostat with extra features that will save you money.
Blower Door Test
Most professional home energy audits will include a blower door test.
A blower door is a powerful fan that is mounted into an exterior doorway of your home. The fan pulls air out of the house, lowering the air pressure inside. The air outside then flows in through all the gaps, cracks, and openings of the home.
Our expert then uses an infrared camera to detect all the locations where insulation is missing and iar is leaking. We also use a nontoxic smoke pencil to detect leaks.
We conduct the blower door test prior to the installation of air-sealing improvements at your home. Then, once the improvements have been made, we perform another test to see how effective the upgrades were in sealing your home.
Lighting Inspection
One of the easiest ways to reduce your electricity costs is by switching from incandescent light bulbs to light-emitting diode (LED) lights. See our Arizona Appliance Wattage Chart page for details on how much energy your household appliances use.
LED light bulbs use 10% of the electricity that incandescent bulbs do to produce the same amount of light. Considering how many light bulbs your home has, switching to LED can save you a lot of money per year.
Appliance Examination
Energy Star certification is a government symbol that signifies energy efficient appliances. These products go through substantial testing to confirm they are energy efficient. These appliances may be more expensive, but you will receive that money back in energy savings.
An Energy Star refrigerator is at least 10% more efficient than models that don’t have the certification. According to energystar.gov, replacing an old refrigerator can save you up to $300 in electricity costs over the life of the appliance.
Energy Star air conditioners have a higher seasons energy efficiency ratio (SEER) and use at least eight percent less electricity than other new models. Replacing your old air conditioner can save you up to 43% in energy costs, which means hundreds or thousands of dollars per summer in the Phoenix, AZ area.
